Yes you can definitely do that but there are certain conditions that apply:
- You can drive in Jamaica with your foreign driver’s license as long as it is in English. You can use it for up to 12 months from your arrival date.
- If you plan to stay longer then you will have to apply for a Jamaican driver’s license that is valid for 5 years. Your current overseas license cannot be expired and must be current. You apply by collecting a General or Private Driver’s Licence form at any Tax Office, get the form completed. Purchase an Examination Fee at the Tax Office. Take the completed form along with three certified passport size photographs and the Examination fee (receipt).
- If your country of origin does not issue English driver’s license then you need to apply for an International Driver’s Permit in your country. When driving in Jamaica keep that with you as well as a photocopy of your passport to present to an official or police officer in the even that you get pulled over.If you are driving a borrowed or rental car ensure you have the correct vehicle documents with you. I.E. licence, registration, fitness and rental company papers. For rental vehicles they will give you a copy of documents and not the original.
