Get to Know Kingston Jamaica
Kingston was founded in 1692, as a place for survivors of the earthquake that destroyed Port Royal. It was made capital of Jamaica in 1872 when the government passed an act to transfer government offices from Spanish Town to Kingston. By the end of the 18th century, there were over 3000 brick buildings in downtown Kingston. However, most of these buildings were destroyed by the 1907 Kingston earthquake. This caused the restriction of buildings being constructed to be no more than 60 feet (18m). As you drive through Downtown Kingston today, you can see some of these buildings of yesteryear. Some abandoned and some are used for modern commodities, such as restaurants, retail outlets, courthouses, police stations, and even housing. Downtown Kingston is also home to a lot of attractions some of which we will mention soon. The city has two faces, Uptown Kingston and Downtown Kingston.
Downtown Kingston is loud and definitely not shy. Uptown Kingston, on the other hand, is more reserved and some would say, more sophisticated. However, it still has that loud character that you would expect from our capital city. Uptown holds the city’s best hotels and restaurants, largely confined to New Kingston, with its cluster of tall buildings around Emancipation Park.
